FAQ

What is an Experience Center?

The topic of digitalization and what it means for the (sheet metal) industry, each company and staff from production up to the GM is hard to grasp. Because you cannot see it working, and consequences might be unclear. At the same time the gap between our private use of digital opportunities and our way of working has never been so big. The Experience Center aims to show how this gap can be narrowed and to make possibilities and results of digitalization visible and tangible for everybody.

What are you building there?

Two streams following each other are at work:
As with every customer AXOOM did assess the digitalization grade, needs and potentials for GSM and is working on this as a regular customer project.
At the same time the idea for the Experience Center came up to show others how digitalization can also work for smaller companies.

How did that happen?

GSM: When buying the company we were thinking about the idea of digitalization. We started asking questions – and there was nobody who could answer the questions. During this search we met Jan Bruggink who is key to connecting people around digitalization. He said that Axoom is young, dynamic, fast growing, and has a reputation of doing things instead of talking about them, developing speedily. That sounded like what we were looking for. So we prepared the mockup – had to make sure we’d get the attention – and came to Karlsruhe. Axoom was surprised but did see the potential in it. Apart from that the “people factor” also felt good, so slowly the project built up.

Why are you doing it?

GSM: we do not only have a sheet metal factory, but we want to optimize the way the factory works, make sure that the company name has value, want to have fun trying new things and upgrade its level of performance. Solution is digitalization and improving processes instead of just buying more machines.

TRUMPF Nederland: For TRUMPF Nederland, showing sheetmetal customers the advantage of Smart industry and be a partner for building a smart factory (TruConnect)

AXOOM: With Software, just like every intangible product, is hard to show and prove to (potential) customers what your solutions can do for them. And as there are not that many experiences and results with Industry 4.0 in place in the industry it was a tempting idea to be able to show our platform in working/live environment.

Why with AXOOM?

GSM: When buying the company we were thinking about the idea of digitalization. We started asking questions – there was nobody who could answer the questions. In the network we met JanB who is key to connecting people around digitalization. He said that Axoom is young, dynamic, fast growing, and has a reputation of doing things instead of talking about them, developing speedily. That sounded like what we were looking for.

Why with GSM?

AXOOM: We were not impressed with the size of the company but impressed by the mentality of the people involved. People who have no clue about sheet metal buy the company – and are, because of that, so more open minded and want to set up something different. We did not exactly know what we had in front of us, but we liked the idea. And Trumpf Nederland in the boat with us made it a lot easier. Because adding to the people factor we then had the local factor as well.

TNL: We realized that the Dutch market is ready and waiting for digital solutions. So we were desperately thinking about how to build up something when GSM and AXOOM came up with the idea. We do have many customers like GSM, so we knew that there we could try what works well and gain many important experiences that can be transferred to other customers. And AXOOM being also part of the TRUMPF group made things a lot easier as well and we took the chance.

Who is involved in this endeavor? And what is your role?

Concerning the Experience Center the three parties did work together contributing content and ideas in equal parts.

AXOOM: The plafform as the core of all included an used software as well as our consulting and machine connection skills.

TRUMPF Nederland: Partner in providing experience in sheetmetal manufacturing (hardware + software + service)

What is in there for you? / What are your benefits?

GSM: start of the change, self-check, “if you want to understand someting try to change it” > outer commitment,

AXOOM: check , if we are on track, practical way of thinking how to work with companies: improving processes, scalability, other country,

TNL: many opportunities, hands-on and learning along the way, close-up to a customer, build-up a proof of concept for sales guys,
